Local Library Campaigns

The effects of cuts across local government have been keenly felt by library services up and down the UK, with local authorities earmarking hundreds of libraries for closure and many more under threat from cuts to opening hours and staff pay and conditions. However, despite being seen as a ¥soft target for cost-cutting measures, the threats to the public library service have galvanized people from all walks of life to fight to keep their local library open.

Campaigns are happening at a local level nationwide, and UNISON is proud to support the range organisations and individuals involved in this tireless work. Such is the speed and nature of the cuts to local services that new campaigns are springing up on a weekly basis Ð too many to list here! The links below provide up to date information from a range of organisations UNISON is working with to coordinate and support local campaigning initiatives:

Public Libraries News This well-respected and regularly updated website contains information about the closures proposed across the country, with links to relevant campaign groups and news articles.

Voices for the Library Voices for the Library are a campaigning group of librarians and information professionals who have set up this website to share positive stories from public libraries and librarians, provide factual information about library usage and draw together the fragmented responses to the many attacks on UK public library services.
