About

The local government service group brings together members who face similar employment issues.

This strengthens our work to improve pay and conditions, campaign to keep jobs and quality public services, ensure workplaces are safe and challenge discrimination.

Being part of a service group helps us tailor our services to members and work together effectively and democratically.

UNISON’s local government service group represents the employment needs of our members in councils and related public services.

Who are our members?

We represent members employed or contracted by organisations including:

  • councils;
  • schools;
  • further education;
  • the Care Quality Commission;
  • the Food Standards Agency.

Benefits

Members have access to union benefits tailored to their job. If you experience problems, your UNISON representatives will be able to help. They know the issues affecting your sector from first-hand experience.

When it comes to professional development, the union can tailor our courses to workers in specific sectors. This allows UNISON members to continue to improve their skills.

Structure

Members are elected by an annual ballot to UNISON’s local government service group executive.  They decide on policies and activities. Priorities and policies are decided at the annual local government service group conference.
