UNISON says inflation figure hardly encouraging

New figures show inflation fell to a four-year low of 2.1% in November but UNISON members are hardly feeling any improvement. A fall in inflation is only positive news if earnings increase.

UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, said:

“The new inflation figure is hardly ‘encouraging’.

“Energy bills are set to go up, average earnings have risen by less than the rate of inflation for the fifth year running and households’ pay packets have significantly fallen since the crash of 2008.

“Workers continue to see a squeeze in their pay and the cost of living crisis will carry on as long as their pay does not increase.

“We have people being turned down for loans or overdraft by their banks and having to rely on food banks or turn to unscrupulous payday loans.

“Average earnings today are no higher than they were 10 years ago and the Government’s attempt to mask reality is not working.”
