Support for family and friends of deceased members

We are so saddened to hear of members dying from COVID-19, including so many who have died in the line of duty, as they try to help others in this unprecedented time.

We want you to know that if you’re the family or friend of a UNISON member that has died, we’re here to help.

UNISON death benefit

If you are the next of kin of a UNISON member who has died, you can apply for our death benefit.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and from 1 March 2020 to 30 November 2021, the next of kin of deceased members who meet the below criteria will receive a benefit of £576.

To claim UNISON Death Benefit a deceased member must:
  • Have been a member for 4 weeks prior to Death
  • Have no arrears of contributions
  • Must be in full membership
  • And you must claim for benefit within 12 months of the date of the deceased member’s death.

Retired Members

Please note due to protections negotiated at the time of merger Death Benefit is only payable to ex-Nupe retired members.

You can claim UNISON death benefit by filling in the form below and returning it to your local UNISON regional office by email or post.

Local government, NHS pensions and other

If your deceased loved one worked in the NHS or for local government, you may be able to access their pension. Find out more:

If the deceased member worked for a different organisation, you can ask the local branch for advice. Find the local branch using our Branch Finder tool, but entering the employer name.

Our welfare charity, There for You also offers support including help with funeral costs, hardship grants and more.

If you’re partner or dependent of the deceased member you can also take up any of the services they offer to members.
