Burma
Burma is ruled by a brutal military dictatorship, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), following the overriding of the democratic elections in 1990 which were won by the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi. Aung San Suu Kyi was finally released in November 2010 after spending 15 of the past 21 years under house arrest. Politicians, pro-democracy activists and supporters of free trade unions are imprisoned and Burmese citizens confronted with fear and intimidation. Forced labour is imposed on workers, including children, and trade unions are banned from operating.Philippines
The Philippines has become a priority country for UNISON as it is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a trade unionist.Over the past few years UNISON has forged greater links with unions and rights organisations in the Philippines and is building links with diaspora groups in the UK. more..
