NHS Next Stage Review

(16/01/08) UNISON has submitted a written response to the health minister Lord Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review.

The response highlights a number of practical solutions to problems around issues such as Agenda for Change and the implementation of the Knowledge and Skills Framework, as well as more ambitious recommendations for alternatives to the use of the market.

The response also addresses the issue of an NHS constitution, arguing that this could be a useful device for restating the founding principles of the NHS in a modern format, but that for it to be a truly worthwhile exercise it needs to provide robust guarantees to staff and be legally binding on all providers of healthcare.

In the Interests of Patients

This report examines the impact of the creation of a commercial market in the provision of NHS care. UNISON believes this is inefficient, costly, undermines the key principles which underpin the NHS, and risks undermining the quality of care.
