UNISON's Keep the NHS Working campaign ran from 2006 to 2008 and was established at a time when the NHS in England was in serious financial deficit and NHS jobs and services were under threat. The campaign also highlighted the threat of privatisation to UK health services generally, and focused its energy on fighting to retain staff and services within the NHS.
UNISON continues to campaign to protect the NHS and other public services through our 'Million Voices for Change' campaign.
Our current focus is on primary care in England where the government is encouraging private sector involvement through its Transforming Community Services initiative.
Record investment and service modernisation have delivered real improvements in the services offered to patients - services which remain free at the point of use.
But the introduction of competition and the increasing involvement of the private sector is putting our NHS at risk.
The government's market style reforms have led to instability and financial debt, the closure of wards and job losses.
NHS patients and staff share our concerns that more changes could undermine the quality of healthcare.
UNISON is calling on the government to stop expanding the role of the private sector in the NHS, and to call a halt to unnecessary and untested reforms.
We want a period of stability. We want to keep the NHS working.
