Ash Dhobi, deputy chair of the national Black members’ committee
UNISON means to me, as an individual, the collective support that I have received all through my employment. I’ve been with different employers and each time, UNISON has backed me up.
They’ve encouraged me to become the person I am, through the networking, with the Black members and all the other self-organised groups.
Today, I hold the position of deputy chair for the Black members’ committee and that’s through UNISON giving me the opportunity to develop my skills and move forward.
And I personally owe a lot to UNISON, as a Black member, because it recognises Black members and we’re supported.
I go to the equality liaison meeting and Black members are very well respected and their views are taken on board and we move forward.
I believe UNISON has been there for me when I needed it, to develop my own self, my life, my experiences.
