Women caught in front line of Government NHS pay squeeze

Christina McAnea, UNISON Head of Health, will deliver a hard-hitting message to the Government when she speaks to NHS workers at the union’s women’s conference in Brighton today (13 February).  Ms McAnea will say:

“Enough is enough – this pay cap must come off.  The vast majority of staff in the NHS are women and they are unfairly bearing the brunt of the Government’s pay freeze and squeeze on their pay.  They use nurses as a backdrop for a good photo opportunity, but have the cheek to say they don’t deserve a pay rise.

“I take my hat off to Tory MP Stephen Dorrell who had the good sense to say this week that you cannot keep NHS pay down “indefinitely”. It is time for others in his party to rally in support of NHS staff – the nurses, healthcare assistants, occupational therapists, cleaners, cooks and admin staff who care for patient 24/7 and are being treated appallingly by this Government.”
