Patient safety must come first

UNISON, the UK’s largest health union, today called for proposals to give information to patients and their families about the number of staff on each ward or unit, to be taken one step further.

Christina McAnea, UNISON Head of Health, said:

“We know that if nurses are being asked to care for more than eight patients the dangers increase.   However, patient care is not solely about nurses.  We want the total number of staff needed on any unit to be displayed alongside their roles, shift by shift.  This should be shown alongside the actual number of staff on duty day by day, shift by shift.
