WET conference set to discuss water ownership

UNISON members in the water, environment and transport (WET) sectors are meeting for their annual conference in Liverpool this weekend.

A packed agenda is topped by concerns about water ownership, and the conference will be addressed by Peter Kenway, a director of the New Policy Institute.

National officer Matthew Lay explains that Mr Kenway will be launching a report by the institute that was commissioned by UNISON as a direct result of last year’s conference.

The report examines “the state of the water industry”, particularly in terms of “water ownership and the way it translates on the ground.”

Some aspects of the report have already been published already by UNISON, and received “a lot of good media coverage”.

Mr Lay says that it will inform a great deal of debate at this year’s conference. On the basis of the report, UNISON is calling for a public inquiry into how the water industry is run.
