Energy members to discuss fuel poverty

UNISON members in the energy sector are heading to Liverpool for their annual conference this weekend, with fuel poverty high on a busy agenda.

“We have many concerns about the government’s approach to the issue,” said national officer Matthew Lay. ”It’s creating a multitude of schemes, but none of them are tacking the problem of fuel poverty.

“The Green Deal is a fiasco and the energy industry is struggling to meet government targets because of the rules.”

Delegates will be discussing the idea of a nationally-driven, door-by-door assessment and diagnosis of the energy and insulation needs of the nation.

Mr Lay said that government should be creating such an approach, with an aim of “making sure all properties meet a basic, minimum standard to reduce fuel poverty and address climate change.”

And he added that such an approach would also provide a big boost to the economy and jobs.
