UNISON says government’s plans for housing are ‘shambolic’

UNISON, the UK’s largest union, today hit-back at Planning Minister Nick Boles’ proposals to build new houses on a third more of the country, including green sites, calling the Government’s housing policies “shambolic”.

Karen Jennings, UNISON Assistant General Secretary, said:

“It is a bit rich for Nick Boles to talk about a “moral right” to decent homes when there is nothing moral about the Government’s own shambolic housing policies.

“They have slashed the affordable homes budget by 60 per cent, introduced a wide range of housing benefit changes that will see many thousands of people kicked out of their homes and communities, and caused massive confusion in the planning system through their repeated bodged reforms.

“It is time the Government stepped in to stop builders “stock-piling” empty land but they also need to look at brown field sites and the huge number of empty properties in our inner cities.”
