UNISON tells Herefordshire council to ‘come clean’ over cuts

UNISON members at a mass meeting this week voted for a campaign to resist heavy job cuts and the destruction of non-statutory public services in Herefordshire.

As the council suggests that 320 will go over two years, the union has also registered a collective dispute with the employer.

The union has also issued a challenge to whoever becomes the new leader of the council to come clean and specify what they mean by only ‘statutory’ services remaining.

The immediate campaign strategy will consist of working with opposition group councillors, service user groups and the wider public in Herefordshire, with the following events planned:

  • 16 May – lobby of Herefordshire Council cabinet, 12.30pm, Brockington;
  • 18 May – demonstration, petitioning and rally 11am, Hereford Centre (tbc);
  • 24 May – lobby of full Herefordshire Council meeting from 8am, Brockington.

Meantime, a consultative ballot for possible industrial action as part of the campaign continues.

Regional organiser Steve Akers said: “UNISON members have a question for Tory councillors in Herefordshire – what services will remain and what will be axed?

“As loyal and committed council workers they deserve immediate clarification about the cuts,” he continued.

“UNISON is planning to step up its campaign, including lobbying, demonstrations and rallies. We will also work closely with opposition councillors, user groups and the wider public.”
