Newcastle UNISON calls lobby of council over cuts

UNISON’s Newcastle city branch is urging members, families and friends to join it on a lobby of the council’s cabinet meeting tomorrow, as the region feels the impact of the government’s austerity measures.

With cuts affecting the whole community, the branch – together with the GMB’s northern region – has called the lobby for 4-6pm, at Ceremonial Way, Civic Centre, Newcastle, to call on the council to stop cuts to jobs and services now.

Regional convenor Clare Williams said: “The impact of the government’s austerity measures are now being realised across the region.

“As a union, we will respond both in terms of negotiating in the workplace, but also in mobilising our members as citizens and users of public services.

“In this respect, it is also vital we build alliances with other organisations who are feeling the impact of the austerity measures – particularly those in the community and voluntary sector.”

And she noted: “It is imperative that we send a strong message to the government and councils that we will defend both jobs and services in the public sector.”
