UNISON ‘Team of the Year’

UNISON sponsors the ‘Team of the Year’ prize at the Nursing Times Awards. Find out more about this year’s winners – St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds.

UNISON is the biggest team in the NHS and social care. We know that it takes a whole team to provide quality care to patients and communities and we’re proud to say that we’re #OneTeam in the NHS.

That’s why we sponsor the ‘Team of the Year’ category at the Nursing Times Awards every year. Several UNISON representatives on your national committee take part in the judging, including Chair Trudie Martin and co-opted academic member Mick Mckeown.

This year was harder to judge than ever, with our category at the awards receiving more nominations than any other. Throughout the NHS and social care there have been so many examples of outstanding team work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ultimate winners this year were a team from St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds. They focussed on improving palliative care for homeless people in Leeds and brought together experienced palliative care and homelessness professionals to do so.

Their entry was an exceptional example of what we can achieve through our health and care services when we work together and support each-other. None of the UNISON judges on the panel were able to keep their eyes dry during their presentation when we heard about some of the ways they’d been able to support vulnerable people at the end of their lives.

We hope to be able to visit St Gemma’s soon to learn more about their ongoing work to share with you all. Congratulations to them and to every team who made the shortlist!
