UNISON is the largest UK trade union for support staff in higher education.

Our 50,000 members include registrars, librarians, personnel, technicians, administrators, clerks, secretaries, cleaners, craftworkers, catering staff, porters and people working in IT, finance and estates management. We work to improve pay, terms and conditions at national, regional and local level. UNISON is campaigning for:

  • Equal pay for work of equal value
  • Better pay and conditions
  • An end to low pay
  • Fair and equal treatment for part-time, term-time and temporary staff
  • Access to training and career opportunities for all staff
  • An end to discrimination in higher education

Higher Education Pay 2012/13 Latest

The second meeting of the 2012/13 JNCHES pay negotiations took place on 20 April. The discussion focussed on the real terms loss in pay that staff have suffered over the last three settlements and how the union demands for a living wage for all staff in higher education could be addressed.

The employers responded by improving their initial offer of 0.5% on all pay points to 0.8%. They also agreed to have further discussions with the UCEA Board on the living wage.

All the higher education unions have rejected the offer. The offer fails to match the increases in the cost of living, let alone address the fall over the last three years. We believe a further increase is affordable, as universities posted record surpluses last year.

A final meeting of JNCHES will take place on 22 May. We will update branches with any developments.

Pay Consultation in Higher Education Result

16/12/2011)Further to circular HE 27/11 the result of the pay consultation was that a significant majority of branches agreed to note the offer. UNISON will be writing to the university employers to confirm our position.

We expect that all HE unions will be in a position to accept or note the offer early in the new year and that universities will be able to pay the award in the January pay roll. Details of the full settlement will be sent in the new year.

We are aware that members will be disappointed with the pay award this year, particularly in light of the continued increases in the cost of living.

We will be shortly be working with other unions to draft a claim for the 2012/13 and are determined to campaign for a decent increase for staff in universities that recognises their contribution and matches the increases in the cost of living
