UNISON welcomes tariff moves at E.ON

Commenting on the announcement today (Thursday) that energy company E.ON is to phase out standard variable tariffs for its customers, UNISON national energy officer Matt Lay said:

“This could be a game-changer, and is good news for E.ON customers and employees alike. It should mean cheaper bills for households, and greater stability for the workforce, at a time of much upheaval in the energy market.

“The hope now will be that other energy firms are able follow E.ON’s example and begin to move consumers who come to the end of their agreement away from the now discredited standard variable tariff, and onto a fairer fixed one instead.”

Notes to editors:
– UNISON is the largest staff union in E.ON and the energy sector.
– Currently when E.ON customers come to the end of their energy deal, they are automatically rolled onto a standard variable tariff. From now on, if they have a smart meter, or agree to have one installed, they will go onto a new fixed tariff.
