All six further education college unions have joined forces to tackle low pay in colleges and to demand pay parity with schoolteachers and other public sector workers.
UNISON, representing 860,000 local government workers, today rejected a three per cent pay offer by local government employers, claiming it was a third class pay offer for a workforce trying to build world class public services.

Defending Pensions during a Period of Economic Uncertainty
UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, today (Tuesday 26 February) accused the Government of hypocrisy over its pensions policy. And called on it to act to shore up future pension provision to protect members against the headlong rush by top companies to raid pension funds by changing the rules.
UNISON is concerned about the pension provision of its 25,000 members in FTSE 100 companies and 40,000 members in private utilities eg Lattice, of which Transco is a subsidiary, has closed its final salary scheme to new members;

Nursing students from across the country are converging on London today (Wednesday February 20), to lead a march organised by the National Union of Students demanding “Grants Not Fees,” and calling for an end to nursing bursaries. Over 10,000 students and supporters are expected to join the march across London, which heads off from outside the University of London Union (ULU), Malet Street at 12.00pm. The marchers will make their way to a rally at Trafalgar Square to be addressed by speakers including Ken Livingstone.

UNISON urged the minister to hold his nerve and stick to the NHS plan which has already been agreed by the government and UNISON.
