Public services union UNISON Cymru Wales is convening a conference this evening (Friday) to highlight the issue of trafficking in women, ahead of International Women’s Day next week (8 March).
UNISON’s membership is predominantly female and the union has a proud record of campaigning on the issue of violence and abuse against women around the world.
Members will gather at Cardiff’s Clayton Hotel to hear guest speakers KimiAnn Williamson, of the Crown Prosecution Service Cymru Wales and Stephen Chapman, anti-slavery co-ordinator for the Welsh Government.
Jennifer Griffin, UNISON lead organiser on women’s rights said:
“Our message is ‘zero tolerance’ towards violence and abuse against women and girls.
“We want to draw attention to the repulsive practice of human trafficking and the fact that it affects even our own communities in Wales. Governments across the world must do more to protect women.”
Kim-Ann Williamson from the Crown Prosecution Service Cymru Wales, and the strategic objectives lead for the Wales Anti-Slavery Leadership Group said:
“I am delighted to be asked to speak at this UNISON event to raise awareness of human trafficking.
“As the leading public sector union in Wales, UNISON will become more aware of the signs to identify, and report incidents of slavery, which will assist in making Wales hostile to slavery.”
