Prepare to turn the spotlight on the stars in our schools

There are less than three weeks to go until UNISON turns the spotlight on the stars in our schools – the unsung heroes who keep our schools going – and you still have time to play your part.

School support staff help children learn, keep children safe and healthy and make sure schools run smoothly. They are the caterers, the admin staff, the finance officers, the teaching assistants, the librarians and more.

We want to use the national celebration day on Friday 28 November to shout about all the wonderful work they do every day and just how vital they are for our children’s education.

And you don’t have to be a parent to join in - grandparents, aunts, uncles, governors and teachers can all get involved.

There are lots of resources both at the dedicated Stars in our Schools website but also on the schools section of the online catalogue.

MPs across the country are using the day to go into schools to find out more about the work of school support staff. And there’s a template letter on the Stars website for you to ask your MP to take part.

There is a ‘You’re a Star in Our School’ certificate, which can be downloaded and adapted for local use.

Regions have been sent photoboards for photo opportunities that can be circulated on social media. You can also download a pdf of the board.

Regions will receive a supply of 1,000 schools newsletters the week before the celebration day, but you can also order them (stock number 2166), using the oline catalogue.

And there are stickers: ‘UNISON supports the stars in our schools’ and ‘I’m a star in my school’ to order.

Tell us what you are doing by emailing us at education@unison.co.uk. You can also join the conversation on Facebook (UNISON in Schools) and Twitter  #StarsInOurSchools and show your support by getting the twibbon for your Twitter account.
