UNISON president condemns ‘Victorian’ Britain with ‘food banks and soup kitchens’

UNISON president Maureen Le Marinel addressed UNISON’s disabled members’ conference in Manchester today, declaring: “This government plans nothing less than a systematic unravelling of the welfare state.” And she condemned the politics of austerity that are “standing in the way of delivering the growth and the jobs this country needs.”

She described a country where “millions are unemployed, with disabled people, women and young people the hardest hit. It’s 21st century Britain and people are living like they did in Victorian times with food banks and soup kitchens.”

And she praised the union’s unique charity There for You and recently launched network of over 40 credit unions which aims to help members who have slipped into debt.

Finally she urged all members to support her presidential charity UKABIF which supports young people suffering from brain injuries.
