UNISON calls for plan B over rising unemployment

UNISON, the UK’s largest union, is calling on the government to stop harming our economy by drastically cutting public spending. The union’s plan B for jobs and growth would help stop rising unemployment, it said.

The latest figures show that the dole queues are growing – unemployment has risen by 15,000 to 2.52 million.

Dave Prentis, UNISON general secretary, said: “Every job lost is a personal tragedy. Millions are currently suffering the misery of unemployment whilst facing a tough jobs market. Women and young people continue to be incredibly hard hit by the recession.

“Clearly austerity is not working. But the government just keeps on cutting. What families and our economy need is a plan for growth and jobs. We are calling on the government to take action before it is too late.”
