‘We in UNISON stand alongside all those who oppose austerity’

UNISON’s general secretary Dave Prentis voiced his support for the protests against austerity taking place across Europe today: “Today, right across Europe, trade unionists and citizens are taking action to protest against the severe austerity measures being imposed by national governments and the European Union.

“On 20 October, some 150,000 people across the UK demonstrated their opposition to public service cuts and their belief that there is a much better way to deal with the economic crisis caused by the bankers.

“That message is now echoed in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, as working people show their determination to oppose wage cuts, job losses and the destruction of the public services on which so many people are dependent at the same time as the rich are being given generous tax cuts.

“We in UNISON stand alongside all those who oppose austerity measures and seek a progressive way forward for the people of Europe.”
