Halton members set for 20 October

UNISON members in Halton in Cheshire are so angry at the government’s austerity measures that at least 60 of them will be making the journey to London on 20 October to join thousands of others from around the country on the March for a Future that Works.

Warning that “the worst is yet to come”, Halton UNISON branch secretary Paula Barker said that Halton council alone must find £25m of cuts during this Parliament.

Ms Barker told the Runcorn & Widnes Weekly News that the government’s strategy is ineffective, pointing out that the deficit is now higher than it has ever been.

She added that tackling tax avoidance would bring in £120bn per year to the treasury, and would be fairer and make more economic sense.

Ms Barker added: “We’re hoping to get our message across at the mass demonstration. We’ll show our solidarity and see what we can do to change the current course.”
