Give us ‘a bit of hope’

Public service workers need “a bit of hope,” UNISON Labour link chair Steve Warwick told the party’s annual conference in Manchester today.

“They talk to me about how hard it’s getting to get by,” he said, and “telling them that Labour’s going to freeze their pay isn’t going to get them excited.”

Explaining how quantitive easing was money printing given a “fancy name,” Mr Warwick had a message for the two Eds: “I don’t want a payrise – I just want to be quantitively eased.”

He was speaking an a debate on opening up Labour’s policy making process.

Angela Eagle, chair of Labour’s national policy forum, told conference that “we face the urgent task of rebuilding our society, our economy, our politics… So our policy making processes need to change.”
