UNISON condemns ‘breathtaking arrogance’ of Gwent police chief

UNISON has condemned the “breathtaking arrogance” of Gwent’s chief constable Carmel Napier for awarding herself a £6,500 bonus while taking police officers off the streets and making police staff redundant.

At a packed meeting of UNISON police staff in Cwmbran last night, members were furious to hear that while many of them could lose their jobs under Ms Napier’s proposals, she had awarded herself a bonus of nearly £6,500.

Andrew Woodman, UNISON regional organiser said: “We are very disappointed to hear that the chief constable has awarded herself this bonus, particularly when no other chief constable in Wales took a bonus and her own deputy refused his.

“It’s good to see that we are all in this together!”

Linda Sweet, UNISON Gwent police branch secretary said: “It’s beyond belief. It’s crass and it smacks of elitism.”
