Commenting on a Chartered Institute of Personal Development (CIPD) report,
which shows that 77% of public sector workers have had their pay frozen, Dave
Prentis, UNISONs General Secretary, said:
“These figures reveal that millions of public sector workers bearing the brunt of
the pay freezes. They face a pay cut as the cost of living soars. Low paid workers
and their families are struggling to survive, while vulnerable people are seeing
the vital services they rely on axed.
“As incomes plunge, overall inflation is predicted to hit more than 5% next
month. At the same time hundreds of thousands of public sector workers jobs
and pensions come under fire. It is no surprise that the economic recovery has
ground to a halt.
“The Government must rethink its economic strategy, as it is clearly not working.
Public sector jobs and services must be safeguarded to give the economy the
kick start it needs.”
