Union chief joins Budapest protest against EU public service cuts

UNISON chief Dave Prentis will take to the streets of Budapest with thousands of protestors on Saturday (9 April) to call for an end to the savage public service cuts hitting low paid workers across Europe.

The leader of the UK’s largest union – vice president of the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) – is demanding that EU Finance Ministers consider an alternative to deal with the economic crisis at their meeting this weekend.

He will join trade union leaders from more than 15 other countries at the ETUC event, including France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Austria and Croatia.

Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, said:

“We must work together to fight for a fair future for the millions unemployed across Europe and a lost generation of young people.

“Public service cuts are being dished out across many countries, causing pain for workers, their families and the most vulnerable in society, who rely on them. The poorest are being made to pay for the world economic crisis, when we know that there is an alternative.

“I am proud to join trade union leaders, workers and members of the public to march in solidarity against the savage cuts being forced through.”

The protest follows on from the TUC March for the Alternative, which saw 500,000 protestors turn out in London to fight the Government’s public service cuts.
