“No change there” Lib Dem’s help Tories in £6bn cuts

UNISON chief, Dave Prentis, today hit back at Tory/Lib Dem coalition plans

to cut £6bn from public spending, calling it a Ògiant leap backwardsÓ. The

union warned that with unemployment figures rising to 2.5m today (12 May),

protecting jobs and getting the economy moving should be the GovernmentÕs

absolute priority.

Dave Prentis, said:

ÒThose voters who put their cross down for change have been sorely deceived.

In a giant leap backwards, the Liberal Democrats have ditched their promise

to oppose the ToriesÕ savage £6bn spending cuts.

ÒThis will have a devastating effect on local services, our NHS and our

schools. It will put the recovery at risk and cost thousands of jobs.

ÒVital services that we all rely on and public sector workers should not be

sacrificed to some sorry game of political chess. The Government should put

the country before their own self-interest and secure the economy and jobs.

ÒUNISON will fight to protect valued public services and jobs. With

unemployment going up to 2.5m today, it makes no sense to add public sector

workers to the dole queues.Ó
