Rising Housing Costs Hit Public Sector Workers Hard

Commenting on today’s Office for National Statistics figures

showing that spending on housing-related costs have risen by

more than £15 a week over the past 2 years, Dave Prentis,

General Secretary of UNISON said:

ÒThese figures show just how ridiculous it is for the Government to

ignore housing costs when it comes to setting limits on public

sector pay.

ÒUNISON members have rent, council tax and mortgages to pay.

The Retail Price Index is currently running at 4% and takes those

facts into account. The true cost of inflation means that nurses,

teaching assistants, home care workers, paramedics and other

public sector workers face a pay cut if the Government sticks to the

2% pay limit.Ó
