UNISON Donates £20,000 to Tsunami Relief

UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, today (4 January) announced that the union would be making an initial donation of £10,000 to the Disasters Emergency Committee. And he has earmarked a further £10,000 for support for sister trade unions in the area affected to help them rebuild their organisations after the disaster.

The union will be working closely with the TUC and the Global Union Federations on this issue. The General Secretary has also urged all the union’s branches and members to give generously to the appeal. He has written to all UNISON’s sister unions in the area, expressing both the union’s condolences and commitment to support them at this terrible time.

Dave Prentis said:

“No one can have failed to be touched by the overwhelming scale of the disaster or the deep personal impact it has had. Our hearts are with all those who have suffered so terribly over the last days. And our thoughts are with all our fellow emergency workers, health workers and local government staff who have been, and continue to be, working so tirelessly on the frontline of the rescue and aid operations”.
