UNISON NEC elects the union’s new presidential team

President Andrea Egan and her vice presidents were announced at national delegate conference

UNISON’s national executive council (NEC) has elected the union’s new presidential team, which was introduced at the end of national delegate conference, in Brighton on Friday.

Former vice president Andrea Egan (pictured above) becomes president, with Libby Nolan and Amerit Rait as her vice presidents.

A local government worker for more than 30 years, Andrea is seconded to UNISON’s Bolton local government branch, where she is branch secretary.

Despite the challenges ahead, Andrea passionately believes that workers’ interests will be served by a united trade union movement and a vigorous Labour Party.

“I believe that, through organising and winning for them, we will convince more people to join the union and together we can stand up to the government,” she says.

Libby and Amerit, who both work in the NHS, were elected to the NEC in June 2021, Libby to a Cymru/Wales seat, Amerit for Greater London.

Amerit is an efficiency manager at St Mary’s Hospital in London. He’s been an active UNISON member since 2015 and has held several branch positions, from young members’ officer, to treasurer and assistant branch secretary. He’s currently with the Imperial College Healthcare branch.

Libby is a nurse practitioner for cardiac surgery, in Morriston Hospital Swansea. She joined NUPE in 1983 when starting her nurse training and became a steward the same year. She’s currently assistant branch secretary of UNISON’s Swansea Bay Healthcare Branch and was recently re-elected to the health service group executive, on which she’s served for six years.
