Rally to protect the NHS bursary – Newcastle

9 January 2016 1:00pm–12:00am

Grey's Monument, Newcastle

UNISON Northern has organised a rally in protest at government plans to remove the NHS bursary which will force nurses, midwives, occupational therapists and possibly paramedics among others into debt of more than £50,000 by the end of their training.

In a healthcare system that already underpays staff, the repayments nurses will be required to make on their debt will ensure a permanently poor workforce.

This is one of the first events of this key campaign for the region and we hope to get more new people involved. We urge UNISON members and their families to join the rally and show their support for our NHS workers.

The rally will take place from 1.00 pm Grey’s Monument in Newcastle City Centre.

Speakers include UNISON regional convenor Clare Williams;, Chi Onwurah, Newcastle Central MP, a representative from the BMA and also a student nurse.
