UNISON lights candles for Holocaust Memorial Day

UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis is today (27 January) urging the public never to forget the victims and survivors of the Holocaust which claimed the lives of six million Jewish men, women and children.  To commemorate Holocaust Memorial day, the union is also calling on its members to light a candle for victims of genocides.

“In memory of the millions who died, I am asking UNISON members to reflect on those atrocious events, which also targeted minority groups.

“Sadly large systematic persecution of people for religious, ethnic or political reasons is not a thing of the past. Today is also a day to remember victims of other genocides and denounce the current despicable tyranny imposed on the people of Syria by the Assad regime.

“Millions of Syrians have been displaced and are refugees in their own country. Inflicting such suffering, harassment, fear and pain has no place in our world. We must learn from the mistakes of the past.”
