Alastair Darling, should resist calls to cut public spending and use next week’s “last chance” budget to pump-prime the economy and create a fairer society, says UNISON, the UK’s largest public sector union.

UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, today (14 March) called for mental health services to be supported, to make sure they can help anxious Britons through the recession. The call comes following a Mental Health Foundation* report that showed levels of anxiety are on the up, with people fearing the world is a more frightening place than it used to.

TORY SECRET DEBT PLAN FOR NHS WOULD SPELL DISASTER

“Tory plans to abolish the limit on how much hospitals are allowed to borrow, could lead to financial ruin and hospitals or vital equipment falling into the hands of creditors” said UNISON, the UK’s largest health union today (13 April). The union is appalled by the possibility of unfettered borrowing leading to hospitals going bust; because of Tory party plans to do away with the “prudential borrowing code”.

7,000 EQUAL PAY CLAIMS WIN COURT DECISION BOOST

Around 7,000 women will be free to pursue their claims for equal pay following a ruling in the Court of Appeal today in the cases of Hurst v Suffolk Mental Health Trust and Arnold and others v Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. The cases involving nurses, healthcare assistants, clerical and secretarial staff, caterers, care assistants and cleaners was brought by their union UNISON, who argued that the women should not have to specify a male comparator when filing an equal pay grievance.

3 PENCE AN HOUR ‘MEAN AND PALTRY’

A joint union* meeting, representing 1.3m Local Government workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, today (7 April) warned the Employers that the 0.5% pay offer is totally unacceptable and called on them to open meaningful negotiations as a matter of urgency.
