I was heartened to see this week that investigations by Revenue and Customs inspectors have led to more than 700 employers being penalised for paying their workers less than the national minimum wage.

What a damning indictment of this government to read in the papers this morning that more than half a million people in Britain are resorting to food banks to stave off hunger and destitution.
