COST OF LIVING CRISIS AND PAY 2023

Conference
2023 Police & Justice Service Group Conference
Date
5 June 2023
Decision
Carried

Conference notes the on-going cost of living crisis affecting members in all the sectors in which we organise in Police and Justice. Inflation is not falling at the rate previously predicted and the cost of food and other basic household goods is continuing to rise at an unprecedented rate.

Coupled with this, mortgage costs have risen inexorably over the last 12 months as the Bank of England has raised interest rates 12 times over this period. In May 2023 the Bank raised the rate to 4.5%, putting hundreds of pounds on the cost of members’ mortgages. Rents have also gone through roof.

Conference welcomes the pay claims which UNISON has submitted with sister trade unions for 2023:

1)RPI + 4% for police staff in England and Wales;

2)An increase of 12%, or £4,000, whichever is the greater for police staff in Scotland;

3)A claim to re-open the three-year pay award for probation staff in England and Wales;

4)RPI + 3% for Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) staff.

Conference calls upon the Service Group Executive to support all the sector committees of the service group to campaign and fight for the best pay deals possible for our members this year.
