Conference notes that on the 7th June 2023 the East of England Probation area signed up to UNISON Eastern Region’s Anti-Racism Charter.

Whilst the Probation Service has a comprehensive work plan in relation to actions identified in a joint union employer survey on race, the feedback from members has been that the actions have taken too long to filter down to frontline staff and that the ‘top – down’ approach has meant that lines of accountability are not clear. The Eastern Region charter supports the work already in place nationally but allows our members to hold the organisation to account around the tangible anti-racist actions the employer has committed to on a regional and local level.

We believe that this Charter should be rolled out to all Probation, Police and Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) branches and that UNISON should support branches in encouraging their employers to sign the Charter and to commit to becoming anti-racist organisations.

We therefore call on the SGE to:

1)Consider adopting the Eastern Region Anti- Racism Charter across the whole service group nationally;

2)To support activists in working with their employers to get them to sign up;

3)To work with Black Member’s Self Organised Groups in supporting activists in how to work with and challenge employers to meet their commitments to the Charter.

4)
