Older People Shouldn’t Have to Choose Whether to Heat or Eat

Decision
Carried

Conference notes that the cost of living crisis is having a severe impact on our older population. Conference agrees that making difficult decisions whether to heat or eat is not what our older population should be doing in a life of retirement, after paying their taxes all their working life.

Conference notes that, at the time of writing, a devolved Executive and Assembly in Northern Ireland are not in place following the May 2022 elections. Conference is very concerned that without the devolved institutions in place, actions that could and should be taken to support older people through this cost of living crisis are not being brought forwards.

Conference agrees that the first priority of all parties in Northern Ireland must be to address the cost of living crisis that so many people across society, particularly older people, are facing, through working together in the Executive and Assembly. Conference further agrees that Government at Westminster must provide the necessary financial supports to devolved Government to take the actions needed to address the cost of living crisis

Conference therefore calls on the National Retired Member’s Committee to support the Northern Ireland Region and its Retired Members Forum in their campaign to restore devolved Government in Northern Ireland to deal with the cost of living crisis.
