DEFENDING THE WOMEN OF COLOMBIA IN THEIR PEACE PROCESS

Conference

Decision
Remitted

Conference notes that the people of Colombia have been subjected to neo-conservative governments for the last 20 years which have openly embraced all aspects of the free market with no restrictions on how these operate.

In this context there are peace negotiations taking place in Havana between the Colombian Governments and FARC. The real likelihood is that any outcome of these negotiations will be detrimental to and in Colombia.

Increasingly women in community organisations report that women are the direct target of violence, including rape and murder.

Conference pays tribute to the work of UNISON Northern Region and the relationships that they have built with Human Rights Organisation NOMADESC in the South West of Colombia.

The practical support of UNISON has enabled NOMADESC to carry out development work with women in affected communities.

Conference further believes that we should target our international work so we can make a difference to women’s lives in line with UNISON objectives.

Conference calls on the National Women’s Committee to highlight the strengths of the relationship between UNISON and the communities of South West Colombia.
