- 2014 Police & Justice Conference
- Date
- 7 October 2014

Conference we are concerned about the proposals for PCSO’s (Police Community Support Officers) being encouraged to become retained firefighters. Discussions are taking place between the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) and one of our District Commanders. It is proposed the use of volunteer/retained firefighters be trialled with PCSO’s within the districts of Braintree and Uttlesford, Essex.
On the promise that doing so “would significantly increase their salary”
This would be the first such trial in the UK.
Conference calls upon the Service Group Executive to work with other UNISON Police Branches, Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) in an effort to reverse any proposals for PCSO’s to become volunteer/retained firefighters in the future. Also, to establish how widespread such proposals are across the 43 police forces.
