Disability Access for Events

Conference
2013 National Disabled Members' Conference
Date
23 May 2013
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference recognises the work done at national level to ensure the access needs of disabled members are met when attending national events.

Conference also notes the commitment of the union in ensuring disabled members are enabled to fully participate in all the work of the union.

However, national events and circumstances are not always mirrored at regional and branch level.

Venues, hotels etc are booked with assurances from suppliers that these are “disabled friendly”, often this is clearly “misspelling”. All venues, hotels etc must be checked by a suitably competent person to ensure as far as possible, these venues are suitable for our members.

In the longer term, this conference requests the National Disabled Members Committee to work together with the National Executive Committee and other unions and the Trade Union Congress to develop a standard assessment and encourage suppliers to adopt a nationally acceptable defined standard.

However, in the meantime, this conference asks the National Disabled Members Committee to remind Regions to ensure they and branches in their regions visit venues and hotels etc before committing to bookings to ensure that suitable facilities exist to allow participation by all our members.
