AIRBRUSHING

Conference
2011 National Women's Conference
Date
22 September 2010
Decision
Carried

This Conference is concerned at the increasing levels of the artificial portrayal of women in the media.

It is recognised this has a disproportionate impact on women and young girls. This can undermine the self esteem of these women and young girls when they are unable to obtain this artificial standard leading to increasing levels of eating disorders and other addictions to maintain low weight.

It is now common place for young women who are not yet fully developed to resort to surgery to achieve the airbrushed images portrayed in the media.

We instruct the National Women’s Committee to:

1)Work with UNISON’s internal organisations to develop a campaign.

2)Work with other relevant organisations to broaden the campaign.

3)Have a large campaign board for people to sign at the National Delegate Conference 2011 and other major UNISON events where possible.

4)Raise awareness of this issue throughout the union.
