This 2011 WET Conference notes that as part of the coalition’s comprehensive spending review was the announcement that the carbon reduction commitment energy efficiency scheme is to become a new carbon tax on public sector organisations like the Environment Agency, British Waterways and Passenger Transport Executives and larger companies like those in the water industry.

UNISON WET branches and particularly those with workplace environmental representaatives will need to oversee ensuring employers take action on reducing energy use and that this means a reduction of carbon and not jobs and services undertaken.

We call upon the Executive to advise branches of the need to ensure this issue is on the joint union/management agenda with regular discussion and monitoring essential. This can be an important driver in ensuring that the union is involved in workplace energy management.
