Living Wills & Advance Directives

Back to all Motions

Conference
2011 Retired Members' Conference
Date
7 June 2011
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference believes many retired UNISON members would like to make their wishes known concerning their medical treatment and/or their financial or other affairs at the end of their lives in case they become incapable of doing so at the time.

Conference believes many of them would be glad if their trades union could signpost them to a service they could trust.

n particular retired members should be encouraged to:

1. not delay in making a will and seeking advice from a solicitor on this issue.

2. ensure the legal validity of their will

3. include in their will or associated legal papers provision to appoint power of attorney to a person of their choice to ensure at all times their best interests are served.

Conference instructs the National Retired Members’ Committee to ask the National Executive Council to investigate adding ‘advance decisions’, formerly know as living wills, advance directives and Powers of Attorney to the range of UNISONplus services.
