THE SINGLE EQUALITY BILL

We recognise and welcome the Single Equality Bill which will change Discrimination Legislation in important ways.

We recognise the significance of the clause on positive action and measures to redress historic discrimination in the recruitment and promotion of Black and other discriminated groups.

However this Bill provides an opportunity to go beyond monitoring statistics and enables us to say to our employers who clearly aren’t employing or promoting Black people to start implementing positive action.

Conference calls on the NBMC to:

1.Work with the NEC on discussing the Bill and planning how we can use the tool of positive action to counter racial discrimination;

2.Work with our representatives on Labour Link to strengthen the positive action clause and make it enforceable rather than voluntary;

3.Report back to the NBMC Conference 2011 on the work that has been undertaken with this initiative.
