NATIONAL SLAVERY MEMORIAL DAY

Conference

Date
7 August 2009
Decision
Carried

UNISON was actively instrumental in winning August 23 as the National Slavery Memorial Day in 2007. However the response of our union in leading and organising Black workers and others to commemorate this day has been very low key or in some cases non-existent. The union must commit to a regionally supported event and an annual observance of a 3 minute silent tribute – as directed by UNESCO.

We therefore call upon the National Black Members’ Committee to work with the National Executive Council to:

1.Promote and advertise August 23;

2.Agree Regional funding for an annual event;

3.Ensure regions hold an event annually, encouraging Regional Black Members’ Committee chairs to actively push for this;

4.Ensure regions report back to conference in 2011.
