Conference
2009 Water & Environment Service Group Conference
Date
4 March 2009
Decision
Carried as Amended

During this credit crunch we are yet again seeing jobs disappear in our sector despite economic downturns having little detrimental impact on our business. Thames Water and the disgraceful treatment of its call centre staff is the latest example of an employer attempting to hike up already obscene profits.

Conference is also appalled over the use of blacklisting agencies like ‘The Consulting Association’ by prominent companies operating in the water industry including Balfour Beatty and Costains. Such anti-trade union activities which can lead to the unemployment and unlawful discrimination of trade union members are despicable and totally unacceptable.

Conference asks

a)that our Executive and members actively support UNISON members who take industrial action to preserve their jobs and terms and conditions by any legitimate means within the rule book and the letter of the law;

b)That branches be asked to raise UNISON’s concerns about companies’ use of blacklisting agencies with their employers with a view to excluding such contractors from any future contracts with their employing company.
