FUTURE CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

Conference
2009 Retired Members' Conference
Date
10 June 2009
Decision
Carried

This Conference believes Elderly people deserve the best possible care in their latter years. Conference has in the past expressed concern about the level of care in the community, particularly where this service has been outsourced.

Some care provision in sheltered accommodation is now provided by contacts on refrigerators to indicate to a central point that the elderly person or a carer has been active in the kitchen, other devices indicate movement in the accommodation, no proof in either case that it is the elderly person moving about.

This sort of service can easily be provided in the future in non sheltered accommodation. There is no substitute for human contact for elderly people requiring care, and not just the limited 15 minutes or so currently provided.

Conference therefore instructs the National Retired Members’ Committee and calls on the National Executive Council to campaign separately and with other relevant organisations to ensure Government and Local Authorities responsible for care in the community provide the best possible personal contact care.
